GIB NEWSGIB For the Mac? Date: Tuesday, September 18, 2001 I expect the Mac version of GIB to be released in alpha over the next couple of days. If you are a GIB customer and would like to test it, please let me know and I'll get it to you when it's ready. It should run natively under either Mac OS 9 or OS X. Unfortunately, GIB needs to go to the replicators in a week or so, and I don't think that McGIB will be ready in time. So I'll be trying to figure out a sensible distribution mechanism; simplest may be to make the Mac version primarily a download product with some of the larger things distributed on the existing CD (the deal library, etc). If anyone has any suggestions here, I'll be delighted to hear them. Thanks! Matt Ginsberg The GIB home page is http://www.gibware.com
I'm getting asked about this reasonably often, so let me try to tell people what the state of play is (as it were). GIB's user interface is written in a language called wxWindows. In theory, there is a wxWindows port to the mac. In practice, though, it's moderately buggy. We've ported GIB, and I've watched it work (mostly). Then things go wrong on the wxWindows side and we either fix wxW ourselves or report the bug to try to get it fixed. It's a slow process, but it's ongoing. mac-wxW is much more stable now than it was at the beginning of the year. I know that people want to know when GIB will be out for the Mac, but the bottom line is that I'm not sure. It's not something I've forgotten or shelved, but I want to make sure that (1) when we do release it, it works, and (2) it's somethat that we can establish an easy upgrade path for, as we've got for the windows version.
