2004 World Computer Bridge Championship VIII to be held at NY Summer NABC - In 1996 the American Contract Bridge League established an official World Computer Bridge Championship to be run annually at a major bridge activity. This year’s championships will be held at the Summer NABC in New York City. The top bridge-playing programs, or robots, from around the world are expected to compete. Entries are due by April 30. USBF will not send teams to Istanbul. The majority of the responses to a memberhips poll support a USBF decision not to participate in the Istanbul Olympiad. An overwhelming majority of the responses request relocation of the tournament away from Istanbul. Click Here for more ::>

WORLD TEAMS OLYMPIAD ISTANBUL UPDATE: The WBF informs us that following a satisfactory site inspection, the World Team Olympiad, together with the Seniors International Cup, the World Transnational Mixed Teams Championship and the World University Championship under the auspices of FISU will take place in Istanbul, Turkey from 23 October - 6 November 2004. The 2004 North American College Bridge Team Championship Eighteen teams signed up to compete in this year's championship. The teams were divided into three zones. Each zone played a complete round robin qualifier with the top two teams in each zone winning free trips to New York City July 9 and 1 for the finalsat the Summer NABC. Click here for results ::>

CHAMPION OF INDUSTRY : The ACBL was featured as a Champion of Industry by Pat Summerall Productions on Headline News Network on Wednesday, February 18, 2004. The two-minute segment aired in the United States between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. EST. The segment featured footage from the Fall NABCs in New Orleans, including shots of players intent on their cards and directors busily entering scores.The segment ended with a reference to the ACBL web site to promote contact from the public. Maybe you and your club want to play in the worldwide The Fourth Easter Simultaneous Pairs Tournament organized by the Bridge Club "Sombor" and held between 2nd and 8th April 2004. You do not need to travel anywhere - play with us in your club! Changes in the Bridge Tour USA & Canada : Nancy King, CEO of BPT Prize Money Bridge, reports that the tour will double the number of tournaments in 2004 by adding nine new cities to the tour circuit. In 2003 BPT staged 10 events with $120,000 in prize money and a $20,000 bonus pool. Changes in the setup of BPT payouts are creating more opportunities to win, and the possibility of bigger 'pots'. Omar Sharif is promoting his new film, Monsieur Ibrahim, his first in ages. When asked, on AP Radio, why it had been so long, Sharif said, "I wanted to stop making lousy films, which I've been making for about 30 years..." Mr. Sharif was in the news recently due to an incident with police at a casino in suburban Paris in July. A reporting of that incident in the IBPA Bulletin led to a rebuttal by Michel Abécassis of Paris, printed in the February 2004 issue of the IBPA Bulletin. To read that article, click here.

2004 ACBL HALL OF FAME - At the Summer 2004 NABC in New York City, Jeff Rubens of the Bridge World will join Henry Francis, Memphis; Sami Kehela, Toronto; George Rosenkranz, Mexico City; Alan Truscott, NYC and Bobby Wolff, Dallas in the ACBL Hall of Fame.

47th European Teams Championship June 19 - July 3, 2004 takes place in Malmo Sweden. Organizers recently sent out a press release to welcome everyone "...to Malmö 2004. Players, officials, journalists, family members and other guests will find everything they need for a great Festival. This will simply be “the Championship” and “the Bridge Festival” for everyone. Welcome ALBANIA :: Mr. Kostantinos Kapo , President of the new-borne Bridge Federation of Albania, recognised by the Government and National Olympic Committee of Albania, visited the EBL President Gianarrigo Rona in the Presidential Office in Milan and presented the official request to be affiliated to the European Bridge League. The request from Albania will be examined in the next EBL Executive Committee Meeting. If approved, Albania will be the 46th member of the European Bridge League.

PASSAGES ::

Robert Jordan (1927–2004) : Robert Jordan died Saturday, January 10 at the age of 76. In the Sixties, his partnership with Arthur Robinson made the duo one of the premier pairs of the era. A WBF World Life Master, Jordan placed second in the World Team Olympiad 1964 and 1968. Jordan won the McKenney Trophy in 1960 and the Mott-Smith Trophy in 1961 and 1962. His NABC victories include: Vanderbilt (1961, 1968); Reisinger (1966, 1967); Master Mixed Teams (1959); Open Pairs (1960, 1962).

Bob Evans (1941-2004) : Australian star Bobby Evans has died in a Sydney hospital, following his competing in the Australian Summer Festival of Bridge. Evans won the Australian Youth Teams (1970), the Far East Pairs Championship (1971), the Maccabiah Games (1985) and three Australian Open Teams Championships. He also successfully captained the Australian Youth Team. Cause of death is unknown at this time.
