The
ACBL's FALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Sunday Nov 18 - Tuesday, Nov 27.
Players from across the North American continent, and many more
from around the world, are gathering for the Fall North American
Bridge Championships.
Welland Wins Reisinger - An extremely
close Reisinger final, complicated by an appeal involving the
two highest-scoring teams in the event, saw the squad of Roy Welland,
Bjorn Fallenius, Howard Weinstein, Steve Garner, Brad Moss and
Fred Gitelman finish in the winners' circle. The final official
score for the Welland team was 31.65. This was the first NABC
win for captain Welland, whose best previous finish was second
in the Spingold Knockouts in Anaheim (2000). Finishing second
was the team of George Jacobs, Ralph Katz, Alfredo Versace, Norberto
Bocchi, Giorgio Duboin and Lorenzo Lauria who finished with 31.19.
The Jacobs squad was the high scorer at the end of play, but an
appeal filed earlier in the second final session held the official
result in limbo until the appeal could be ruled upon. The appellant
in the case was the Welland team, the defendant Jacobs. The Welland
team won the appeal, moving them into first while Jacobs dropped
to second. In third was the winning Bermuda Bowl USA 2 team led
by Rose Meltzer (Kyle Larsen, Peter Weichsel, Alan Sontag, Lew
Stansby and Chip Martel) with 31.00. This team was coached in
France by Reisinger winner Fred Gitelman. Rita Shugart's squad
(Andrew Robson, Tony Forrester and Boye Brogeland) was fourth
with 30.85.
Cohen wins NA Swiss - The team of Richard
Coren, Billy Eisenberg, Larry Cohen and Drew Casen put on a show
of strength in the finals of the North American Swiss Teams, securing
victory in the event with one round left to play. Coren finished
with a score of 140.91 VPs. In second was the team captained by
Lenny Ernst. Ernst, playing with Richard Halperin, Colin Revill,
Paul Erb and George Pisk, posted a final tally of 124.89. Ernst
and Coren were neck-and-neck in the two-session final of the event
until their meeting in the fourth round, which Coren won decisively.
Coren pulled away from the rest of the field after the match,
and Ernst kept good form by not allowing the defeat to sidetrack
them in the remainder of the final. In third with 123.68 was the
squad of David Siebert, John Onstott, Harvey Brody and Doug Dang.
Turks Top Blue Ribbon Pairs A pair of
players from Turkey have become the first players from that country
to win a North American championship. Salvador Assael and Nafiz
Zorlu topped the field in the six-session Edgar Kaplan Blue Ribbon
Pairs. The duo posted a final score of 2105.71 to narrowly edge
Steve Landen of Rochester Hills MN and Pratap Rajadhyaksha of
Powell OH, who finished with 2100.06. .Click

Randy Pettit, Allan Siebert, P.O. Sundelin and Arnie Fisher, defeated

Meltzer does it again!
The Open Board-a-Match Teams was decided
by the narrowest of margins - .01 - as the reigning Bermuda
Bowl champions captained by Rose Meltzer held on to claim
victory in the two-day event. It was one of the closest finishes
ever in an NABC event with the top four teams finished less than
one board apart. The squad of Hjordis Eythorsdottir, Valerie Westheimer,
Rozanne Pollack and Carol Simon outscored a powerful field to
claim victory in the four-session WomenÕs Board-a-Match Teams.
